Ann Leslie, Indian Valley branch’s Executive Director, shares her story of why she is an advocate of Go Red For Women.
“Eleven years ago I took a medication to treat a migraine and it caused a rupture in LAD artery from my heart. This artery, often referred to as the “widow maker” because damage there often results in death. Thankfully, I did not have a heart attack but I did exhibit some of the same symptoms and required surgery to repair the damage. In one split second I went from being a 40-year-old athletic, busy mom of three young boys, to a cardiac patient. I spent my whole life as an athlete and was fortunately in great health and very physically fit when this event occurred. I knew the minute I stepped on the elliptical for my usual morning workout that something was very wrong. I knew my body well and it saved my life because I did not ignore the signs. I was lucky. I recovered and never needed cardiac rehab thanks to my fitness level before surgery. I was able to work back up to my previous workout routine and am still at it 11 years later. The Y has been a big part of those years. It’s comforting to know that when working out at the Y that I am in a good place with facilities equipped with AED’s (automated external defibrillator) and trained and certified staff. It’s never too late to get in shape. Even if you have never had a heart issue, it is good to be physically fit. It not only prevents heart disease, but if you ever should have a heart issue, recovery and survival rates are often improved if you are fit. Go Red for Women reminds us that women often put themselves last because we are so busy taking care of others. Make sure you talk to, and partner with your doctor about your fitness, and make a commitment to start taking care of your health!”
