Wednesday, May 31, is National Senior Health & Fitness Day! The North Penn YMCA, along with over 100,000 people at more than 1,000 locations will participate in events with the common goal of promoting health and fitness for mature adults. Each of our branches, located in Lansdale and Harleysville, will be holding separate events to celebrate National Senior Health and Fitness Day. The Lansdale branch will be celebrating on May 18!
Lansdale Area branch:
Thursday, May 18 from 9:00am to 12:00pm
There will be free fitness assessments, special Silver Sneakers Classic classes, over 40 vendors (listed below), snacks and giveaways. The event is open to everyone. For more information, please contact Susan at [email protected] or at 215-368-1601 ext. 233.
The premise of this nationwide celebration is based on the fact that with increasing age comes inevitable body changes. Exercise can prevent or delay diseases and increased metabolism can slow down weight gain. Increased exercise can also keep muscles and bones strong, therefore reducing the risk of osteoporosis, bone fractures, and other injuries.
This helps keep seniors more independent, in their homes longer, and able to complete their daily tasks. Other than physical benefits, exercise can improve brain health by improving cognition and reducing the risk of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.
The North Penn YMCA shares this same belief and therefore offers a variety of Active Older Adult (AOA) programs and activities. These programs stimulate both body and mind, and also increase self-confidence and sense of achievement while building relationships and celebrating the success and milestones of other older adults within a supportive community. Find a program for you!
Below is our list of vendors who will be attending Senior Health & Fitness Day at Lansdale! There will also be an inflatable colon, which is a walk through exhibit displaying colon health and the risks, symptoms, prevention, and early detection for colorectal cancer.
