Do you have questions about Group Exercise? We have answers. We are here to help you find the answers to some of the most frequently asked questions.
Q. Are all of the classes on the schedule included in my Membership?
A. Most of the classes are included with your FULL membership, with the exception of a few small group training classes such as Boxing, TRX and Boxing/TRX Fusion. Classes that require a fee are Highlighted in YELLOW on the schedule outside of each of the studios.
Q. Can I participate in Group Exercise classes if I’m a member of another Y?
A. You may participate in any of the group exercise classes that are included with a full membership.
Q. Do I need any prior experience before entering a group exercise class?
A. As with any physical activity, you should consult with your doctor prior to starting a different exercise program. There is a detailed description of each class in the back of each session brochure that should help you to determine if a class is right for you. If you are still in doubt, please feel free to talk to the instructor or the Group Exercise Coordinator for more information.
Q. What should I wear to class?
A. For our CARDIO and STRENGTH classes, a breathable t-shirt or workout top are ideal, with shorts, pants, leggings or capris and standard athletic shoes. No open toed shoes, sandals or flip flops.
For CYCLE classes, a breathable t-shirt or workout top works great, with athletic shoes or cycling shoes with clips. Please do not wear flared long pants during cycling classes, as they can be a safety hazard around the gears of the bikes. Form fitting pants or shorts are a much better choice.
For MIND/BODY classes like Pilates and yoga, loose fitting clothing may interfere with movement.
Q. What should I bring with me to class?
A. For our MIND/BODY classes, you are welcome to bring your own yoga mat; although there are mats available in the equipment closets. A bottle of water is always helpful.
For all other classes, a bottle of water and a positive attitude will greatly enhance your class experience.
Q. It’s my first time in a cycle class – will someone help me get set up?
A. Try to arrive at least 10 minutes early if you’re new to cycle classes. This gives you plenty of time to get your bike set up properly. Your instructor will guide you on the appropriate seat and handle settings for your height and build.
You’ll want to have water or a sports drink with you, as you will sweat! Cycling shorts are a good option for comfort, though not necessary.
