Meet Cherie Landis, YMCA member and another member blogger!
If you check out Cherie’s blog, Fly to Root, you’ll see she’s as active and adventurous as they come! With a clear love for the outdoors – hiking, running, climbing, and bouldering are some of her favorites. But when a fractured ankle from a fall kept Cherie from her normal workouts and activities, she began to become depressed. She looked for solace in the fact that her doctor approved her to swim.
“It was 10 days since the incident, and I was already starting to feel atrophied and soft. I couldn’t stand another sedentary day. I needed to get into a pool ASAP!” Through friends and family, Cherie found her way to our Indian Valley pool.
“The first couple times swimming were uncomfortable with a little bit of pain. But I noticed the next day that my ankle didn’t feel as stiff. I’m not much of a swimmer, but being able to move my body as a whole and really get my heart rate up has had a positive impact on the mental game that accompanies injury. So when it works with my schedule and the friends and family that belong to the Y, I get to the pool! My physical therapist has also commented that swimming will help me regain mobility in my ankle more quickly.”
Read more about how swimming changed her attitude and helped with the healing process during an injury. “I also started to feel a little motivation come back to do the nonactive things I love, like writing, reading, and eating.”
Whether you are nursing an injury, or just looking to boost your metabolism, or attitude, we’ve got a program, class, or pool for that!
