I think we all plan or hope to be strong individuals – strong in mind, body, soul and spirit.
As with all things, we have seasons. Unfortunately, my “season” of not being strong has lasted far too long.
In 2015, I had a full knee replacement (right knee). Healing was slow, and PT was only the required time. I really did not apply myself.
My first grandchild was born in 2014, second one in 2016 and yet another in 2018. By the time the first child was 2, I realized that I was not doing a good job of keeping up with him – or keeping him safe. It appeared that he could outrun me, and his endurance was never ending. I made small attempts to get a little exercise, or shop healthier but nothing really stuck.
Fast forward to this STRONG program. I work for the Y. I believe in the Y and all they stand for. I know that COVID has not only affected the Y, and my co-workers in many ways, but it also made me get lazier when it comes to baby steps toward a healthier life. With all the zoom meetings, seeing myself on camera was not pleasing – I realized how far I had fallen away from what I needed!
When the notice came out about the STRONG Challenge, I was skeptical but I listened to the video. He gave me hope. He gave me curiosity. He gave me a cheering section. And he gave it to me in a program that I am confident that I can follow. It does not seem overwhelming – in fact, even I could not make excuses for not doing 20 minutes a day of getting my body moving. We all can at least do 2 ten minutes sessions – no matter how busy we are!
I am excited to see all that I can be thankful for come Thanksgiving as this program closes. I can end this year a lot happier and healthier than I started.
