On his 80th birthday, longtime member Joe Hewlett reached an incredible milestone, completing 3,000 miles in the Indian Valley branch pool of the North Penn YMCA. A familiar face at the branch, Joe regularly spends his time swimming laps and working out in the wellness center. With dedication and consistency, he tracked each swim and paced himself to reach this goal on a meaningful day.
Joe’s connection to the Indian Valley Family YMCA extends beyond his own wellness. He previously taught swim lessons for children and led the homeschool swimming program for several years at the Y, helping others build confidence and skills in the water.
“I will just keep going for as long as I am able,” Joe shares. “I’m a believer in the saying, ‘if you don’t use it, you’ll lose it.’” His routine reflects that mindset. Each week, he spends three days swimming, two days training in the wellness center, and walks four miles with his wife.
Joe’s fitness journey really took off when his children went off to college, and he has been setting and reaching goals ever since. He has competed in triathlons and duathlons for 16 years and was even selected to represent Team USA at the 2000-2003 ITU World Championships. For Joe, setting goals keeps him motivated. He chose 3,000 miles because it is roughly the distance across the country, turning each swim into part of a larger journey.
For those just starting out, Joe encourages new members to connect with the Y staff for guidance and support. Simply sharing where you are and where you want to be can help you get started and stay on track.
Joe’s story shows that the Y is more than a place to work out. It is a place where goals are set and achieved, connections are made, and healthy habits can last a lifetime.
