In 2024, Connie received a wake-up call when she was diagnosed with borderline type-2 diabetes after years of unhealthy habits. With insurance challenges making it difficult to obtain medication, Connie realized she needed to take control of her health and make meaningful changes herself.
She started by cutting back on junk food and taking pickleball lessons at her local township courts but soon felt ready to take the next step. Through the North Penn School District Community Education Program, Connie was able to try a 6-week HIIT cardio-boxing class at the Indian Valley branch of the North Penn YMCA at a discounted rate. It was here that she discovered the supportive and welcoming community of the Y.
Walking into her first class she felt intimidated but instructor Angie was encouraging and demonstrated different low-impact options to keep Connie comfortable. “I also found the other people in class were very supportive. They encouraged me and genuinely cared about how I was doing” she shared. When the six week session ended, Connie took the leap and joined the Y as a full member.
After joining, Connie participated in the Smart Start program, where she began working with personal trainer Dave. She continued personal training sessions beyond the program, gaining strength, building muscle, and growing more confident with each session.
The journey was not easy, but Connie’s perseverance and commitment paid off. Since 2024, she has lost an inspiring 75 pounds through regular exercise and healthier eating habits. Today, she is stronger and healthier both physically and mentally. “For me, the Y has been a community of friends who care about each other and support one another. It is my ‘happy place’” Connie says.
Connie’s story shows that taking the first step can be the hardest but at the Y, no one has to take it alone. With consistency, support, and dedication, anyone can take control of their overall wellness. “You have to feel ready and choose to do something for yourself, but once you do, the community surrounds and supports you” she shared. Today, Connie is able to do more than she ever thought possible and enjoy the results of her hard work.
