Y Story – Holly Kroboth

“My name is Holly Kroboth and I was diagnosed with a rare terminal cancer called Pheochromocytoma which metastasized in December 1999. I worked and dealt with my cancer till 2007 when the cancer fully took over. For 10 years I didn’t drive due to some of the medications I was on, constantly seeing doctors, or in the hospital for procedures. I thought that was what my life had come down to. I found out about the LIVESTRONG program in 2017 and quickly got accepted into the program. It changed my life both mentally and physically! I got off the medications that kept me from driving and my whole outlook on life has changed. I noticed the YMCA needed lifeguards and since that was my very first job I spoke to the director who instructed me to get my recertification. I did and now work part-time lifeguarding and teaching little kids to swim. This job has given me a purpose back in my life and I love doing it. I have a life again and that’s all because of the LIVESTRONG program. I have special bonds with my trainers who were amazing and there for me every step of the way. I also had the privilege of going to Harrisburg to lobby for the LIVESTRONG program with our local senators and representatives. Telling my story and how LIVESTRONG saved my life was a true honor. There is nothing I enjoy more than promoting this program because I believe in it so much. It has changed my life for the better and the YMCA is my family. I don’t have a lot of support in my personal life, so the YMCA and LIVESTRONG program have become the that support I needed. I can’t thank you enough for all that the YMCA/LIVESTRONG have done for me and changed my life around. It’s given me a life again.”
